The 2 Laws of Time Management: Time Blocking

Post by Mitu3120 »

n my last post, I referred to the Priority Action Matrix (AP Matrix) as a solution to figure out which of your tasks have value and which don’t. The AP Matrix also considers the level of effort required by each value action, so moving forward you can filter future tasks into each quadrant. Practicing this daily will make it a good habit, and to improve your experience on a project request, it can really help you determine which efforts are worth your time, and it can also help you recognize which activities are wastes of time.

“Chunk” your schedule
On the topic of time wastage, the second law of time management is known as “time blocking.” This involves dividing your day into chunks or blocks so that each chunk of time represents a high priority task that needs your attention, with a bit of minor time uae consumer email list left over for lower priority tasks. Time chunks also take into account interruptions such as mobile calls, along with meals to be taken. It is also recommended to have a small window of time so that you have room for flexibility. If someone asks for help, if you are asked to take on another task or if you are called in for a meeting – then there should be a small window of time to dedicate every day where you can make these accommodations while still respecting your work time priorities.

The myth of multi-tasking
Another reason why time blocking contradicts the multitasking myth is because more and more experts are discovering that multi-tasking does not work. It does not allow you to focus the level of attention you need to perform 100% well on what you are doing; thus triggering an increase in errors; and it adds stress to the individual. The best work is done when the individual is allowed to focus on something fully. When you are allowed to focus your time and energy on a singular task, you are also able to get into the rhythm of the project or the flow as many experts have called it.
