Free Coffee, Bad Apples & the Future of Currency

Post by bappy7 »

What if the entire world could buy coffee with the same Starbucks card? In the summer of 2011, Jonathan Stark gained international attention by trying it out. “Join Jonathan for a behind-the-scenes look at how it worked, what actually happened, and the long-term implications of an experiment in radical sharing of physical goods using digital currency on mobile phones.” So we did.

Starbucks offers a loyalty program (read: card) with which you can buy coffee. It works like brother cell phone list this: You get the card at Starbucks, charge it with, for example, 20 dollars, register the card online at home on Starbucks.com, download the Starbucks app, link your card details to the app and from that moment on you can pay with your mobile app at any Starbucks. The advantage? That you only pay a fee to the credit card company for charging, and not for every payment. With coffee (small amount, many purchases) that can really add up, both in percentage and absolute terms.
