Call for more regulation
Then, on March 30, Zuckerberg came out with a sensational op-ed in The Washington Post . Let me first briefly outline what he discusses in it. He writes:
“ I believe we need a more active role for governments and regulators. By updating the rules for the b2b email list Internet, we can preserve what's best about it — the freedom for people to express themselves and for entrepreneurs to build new things — while also protecting society from broader harms. ”
Harmful content . A standard (for all internet services) should be developed for harmful content. Regulation should encourage companies to build systems that minimize harmful content.
Protecting elections . Legislation is needed to help companies identify political actors and address the latest threats.
Privacy and data protection . There should be privacy legislation worldwide that is inspired by the GDPR. It should also be as equal as possible worldwide, so that the internet does not become fragmented.
Data portability . You should be able to move your data from one service to another. It gives users choice and developers the chance to innovate and compete. There should also be clear rules about who is responsible for protecting data as it moves between services.
