Asked about those comments from the president, Caine told Democratic Sen. Jack Reed that he “went back and listened to those tapes, and I think the president was actually talking about somebody else. And I’ve never worn any political merchandise or said anything to that effect.”

Caine was announced as the next chairman in February, after a late-night firing of Gen. CQ Brown. Caine, a former F-16 pilot who retired in December, was described by current and former officials as a true professiona l country email list who has avoided politics throughout his career.
